Today, we’re excited to spotlight Florence Phillips, the owner of Florence Phillips Music Studio in downtown West Chester. Florence shares her inspiring journey of turning her passion for music into a successful business despite the challenges of navigating the entrepreneurial world.

A Passion for Music from a Young Age

Florence’s musical journey began at the young age of four when she started taking piano lessons in West Chester. She continued her studies until she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano pedagogy. With a deep love for teaching, Florence knew from an early age that becoming a piano instructor was her calling.

Starting Her Own Business During Challenging Times

After working at various studios, Florence took a bold step in 2020 and opened her music studio just as the world was facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. “A lot of life circumstances were changing,” Florence explains, “and I just went off on my own.” This brave decision led to creating a thriving music studio in the heart of our community.

Navigating the Business World as a Woman Entrepreneur

As a woman in business, Florence admits that the journey has had its challenges, especially when stepping into the business side of things. “I didn’t hit too many snags in my field of music,” she says, “but once I started my own business, I quickly realized that the business world is totally different.” Despite this, Florence has embraced her unique strengths as a woman entrepreneur. “I’ve learned to lean into my own strengths and not get in my head,” she shares, encouraging other women to embrace their individuality and trust their abilities.

Role Models and Mentors Who Shaped Her Journey

Several role models have also shaped Florence’s journey. Growing up, she was inspired by the women in her family, including her aunt, who owns a bakery in Delaware, and her grandmother, who also ran her own bakery. Their resilience and entrepreneurial spirit have been a driving force in Florence’s career. She also credits her tax accountant, who has not only helped with the financial side of her business but has also served as a valuable mentor in navigating the complexities of entrepreneurship.

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Women Entrepreneurs

When asked about advice for women looking to start their own businesses, Florence has one powerful message: “Go for it. Women are resilient,” she says. “Don’t be afraid of setbacks. Learn from your mistakes, and keep moving forward.” Florence encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to set goals, take risks, and be persistent—no matter the obstacles. Her five-year goals have been met in half the time, and she’s now setting her sights on her next milestones.

Florence’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, passion, and embracing one’s strengths. Whether you’re a budding entrepreneur or just someone looking to follow your dreams, Florence’s journey serves as an inspiring reminder that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
