A Journey Rooted in People and Passion

Christy's career journey is a testament to the power of adaptability and passion. Her path began in college, where she majored in psychology. Despite her initial aspiration to be a counselor, she soon realized that her strengths and interests lay elsewhere. “I wanted to fix everyone’s problems, but I realized counseling wasn’t the path for me,” Christy reflects.

She pivoted to a business minor and found herself in human resources, where she flourished. From recruiting to working in various capacities at the YMCA, Christy’s career has always been centered around building relationships and working with people. “I’ve always navigated where opportunities came up,” she explains. “Whether it was through human resources or personal training, I’ve followed where my skills and passions have led me.”

Finding Purpose in Nonprofit Work

Christy’s move to Habitat for Humanity of Chester County was serendipitous. After being furloughed during the COVID-19 pandemic, she was drawn to the nonprofit sector by the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to her community. “Habitat was right down the road from the Y, and I felt it was the perfect place to invest all my energy,” she says.

At Habitat, Christy’s role involves overseeing development and marketing efforts, aligning perfectly with her background in human resources and development. Her faith plays a significant role in her professional life, guiding her decisions and affirming her path. “I feel like I was led in this direction,” she notes. “COVID, while challenging, led me to what I believe was my true calling.”

Navigating Challenges as a Woman in Business

Christy’s career has not been without its challenges. She acknowledges the difficulties of gaining respect, especially when entering roles outside traditional career paths. “Getting folks to take you seriously can sometimes be hard, particularly when you haven’t followed a conventional route,” she admits.

Her strategy? Focus on strengths, continuous learning, and personal growth. “If you compare yourself to others, it’s easy to get discouraged,” Christy advises. “Instead, look at your unique talents and focus on those. Embrace challenges as opportunities to shine and grow.”

Drawing Inspiration from Trailblazers

When it comes to role models, Christy finds inspiration in historical figures like Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Oprah Winfrey, who have paved the way for future generations. “I look to those who stood up for what was right and made significant strides in their fields,” she says. Her faith and reflection also play a crucial role in her journey, helping her navigate the complexities of her career with resilience and grace.

Advice for Aspiring Women Leaders

Christy’s advice for women interested in pursuing careers in business or leadership roles is both empowering and practical. “Embrace who you are,” she urges. “Women are naturally compassionate and genuine, and these qualities are strengths, not weaknesses.”

She encourages embracing challenges, learning from failures, and continuously seeking personal and professional growth. “Use challenges to discover who you are and what you’re capable of,” she says. “Find your strengths and don’t be afraid to fail forward.”
